MISM at the 2026 BRCs AI Codeathon
Thank you to Bobby Ni, Melanie Sadecki, and Yaphet Kebede for representing MISM in the second annual NIAID Bioinformatics Resource Centers (BRCs) AI Codeathon last month!
The NIAID-BRCs brought together a diverse group of professionals and students, from staff scientists to graduate students like Bobby, Melanie, and Yaphet, at the Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago from September 16th to September 18th. This group had the exciting opportunity to learn more about how AI tools support infectious disease research. Participants were divided into 11 teams based on their expertise and background, then given different project proposals along with unlimited LLM usage. As a software engineer, Yaphet had a great experience learning about bioinformatics during the project and from other participants with different tool sets.
Bobby, Melanie, and Yaphet learned valuable lessons from this venture and will use them to organize MISM’s next student-run internal hackathon in 2027!
