Dr. Christine Markwalter is an Assistant Research Professor of Global Health at Duke University. She works at the intersection of malaria genetic and sero-epidemiology in western Kenya. Dr. Markwalter integrates data from the field and laboratory with informatics and data science, and is specifically interested in:

  1. The impact of malaria parasite antigen diversity on natural immune responses and protection (and what this might mean for vaccine efficacy and design).
  2. Pinpointing strain-level exposure and transmission events in natural settings to better understand infection outcomes and the transmission reservoir.

Dr. Markwalter completed her PhD in Chemistry at Vanderbilt University and has a Bachelor of Science from Agnes Scott College. She came to Duke as a postdoctoral fellow in 2018 and joined the faculty in 2023.
