Professor in Biostatistics & Bioinformatics, Duke
Cliburn Chan, MBBS, PhD, Co-Director, Professor of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, and Research Professor of Statistical Science at Duke University, serves as the contact MPI for MISM. Dr. Chan is a founding Director of the Duke Center for Human Systems Immunology and leads its Quantitative Science Division. He is also Director of the Quantitative Science Core of the Duke Center for AIDS Research and leads the quantitative components of several multicenter projects, including the Duke Adjuvant Comparison & Characterization program, the Duke SenNet Tissue Mapping Center, and two program project grants in HIV and CMV. Dr. Chan has a multidisciplinary background that spans medicine, immunology, statistics, and mathematics, which is a natural fit for the leadership of the interdisciplinary center.
His research expertise includes (1) computational immunology - stochastic and spatial models and simulations, T cell signaling, and immune regulation; (2) statistical methodology for immunological laboratory techniques - flow cytometry, CFSE analysis, receptor-ligand binding, and signaling kinetics; and (3) informatics of the immune system - reference and application ontologies, meta-programming, text mining, and machine learning.
Dr. Chan provides scientific leadership and oversight of all computational and modeling programs within the MISM Community Development and Education Core, Model and Data Sharing Core, and Research Projects. Together with MPI Dr. Reeves, he will also be responsible for leading the MISM Administrative Core, coordinating with NIAID and external and internal advisory committees, and for fiduciary oversight of the budget and resources.
