Administrative Core, MISM
Assoc. Professor in Biostatistics & Bioinformatics, Duke

Jichun Xie, PhD, Statistician, is an Associate Professor of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics with a joint appointment in Mathematics at Duke University. She co-leads the statistical and computational immunology division (with Dr. Jason Ji) of the Duke Center for Human Systems Immunology. Dr. Xie’s research focuses on developing novel statistical and computational methods for genetics and genomics data to extract meaningful information from high-throughput sequencing data in cancer and/or immunology. She is interested in understanding the complex structure and biological background of the data, and in adaptively developing new methods that leverage these features to enhance analytical power. Thus, Dr. Xie’s research sits at the intersection of Statistics, Machine Learning, Bioinformatics, and Genetics and Genomics/Cancer/Immunology. She enjoys collaborating with both biomedical and quantitative investigators and involving students in those projects, having actively collaborated on analyzing EHR data and developing longitudinal models to compare health utilities and treatment outcomes.

Dr. Xie has published many papers as the first and last author in top methodology and genomics journals, such as Annals of Applied Statistics, Biometrika, Journal of Machine Learning Research, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series B, Genome Biology, and Nucleic Acids Research. Dr. Xie is PI of an R01 and has extensive experience in organizing and leading research projects, currently mentoring three postdocs, one PhD student, three Master’s students, and one undergraduate student.

For the MISM Administrative Core, Dr. Xie — assisted by PhD staff biostatistician Richard Barfield — oversees all experimental design for the MISM Research Projects and supervises students and postdocs to preprocess data and perform feature engineering and dimension reduction to extract meaningful information for downstream analysis. In addition, Dr. Xie works with the MISM Community Development and Education Core to develop workshops or seminars on statistical and computational biology methods and best practices in multiscale modeling.
